Facebook Crypto Scam Drains Salesman’s RM218,239 Savings

A Facebook advertisement promising lucrative cryptocurrency returns has left a 65-year-old water filter salesman in Kuantan more than RM218,000 financial loss.
The victim lost RM218,239 of his savings after entering what he believed was a legitimate cryptocurrency investment opportunity. The scheme began in July when he encountered an investment advertisement on Facebook and clicked on it, according to Malaysian media reports citing Pahang police.
After responding to the advertisement, the salesman was added to a WhatsApp group where he was presented with promises of attractive investment returns. The supposed profits were displayed through a cryptocurrency trading platform, creating the appearance that his investments were performing successfully.
Convinced that the opportunity was genuine, the victim continued transferring money.
Over time, he completed 53 separate transactions through various accounts linked to the digital investment platform. By the time the transfers stopped, RM218,239 had left his hands.
The victim was informed that his digital account had been frozen and that another RM30,000 payment was required to unlock it. Instead of providing access to the supposed investment profits, the new demand raised further questions over where his money had actually gone.
Acting Pahang police chief Datuk Azry Akmar Ayob confirmed details of the case, according to The Vibes. Police are investigating the matter under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. A conviction under the provision can carry imprisonment, whipping and a fine.
The salesman made 53 transactions before the scheme unravelled, demonstrating how individual payments can accumulate into a devastating financial loss.
Social media has become an important battleground in the fight against investment scams. Fraudulent advertisements can place questionable financial opportunities alongside legitimate businesses, news and entertainment, while messaging applications allow prospective victims to be moved into private groups where claims of exceptional returns can be reinforced.
The consequences are particularly severe when cryptocurrency is involved. The complexity surrounding digital assets can make fabricated trading dashboards and supposed investment profits appear credible to people who may have limited experience with cryptocurrency markets.
