Market Overview
Global markets were driven by a powerful rally in precious metals on Wednesday. Spot gold surged 4.11% to $4,245.39/oz, briefly breaking above the $4,300 mark intraday. Spot silver climbed 4.12% to $62.01/oz, extending its advance to fresh multi-year highs. A 0.2% decline in the U.S. Dollar Index (DXY) provided additional support for dollar-denominated precious metals.
U.S. equities ended the session mixed. The Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.49% to close at 54,349, setting another record high, while the S&P 500 slipped 0.17% and the Nasdaq Composite fell 0.83%. Among notable movers, SpaceX plunged more than 13%, AMD lost over 7%, and Alphabet (Google) declined 4%, while NVIDIA outperformed with a gain of more than 3%.
Federal Reserve officials adopted a more hawkish tone. Governor Lisa Cook and voting FOMC member Neel Kashkari both signaled support for additional rate hikes. Meanwhile, July ADP private payrolls increased by just 44,000, the weakest reading of the year, highlighting growing tension between softening labor market data and increasingly hawkish policy rhetoric.
Chinese equities continued their upward momentum. The Shanghai Composite Index rose 1.47%, while the STAR 50 Index surged nearly 5%. Crude oil prices edged lower as reports suggested that Iran and Oman are making progress toward an agreement to reopen shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.
Market Outlook● Precious Metals Rally Driven by Capital Rotation
The sharp rally in gold and silver reflects more than a traditional flight to safety. A weaker U.S. dollar, diverging expectations for monetary policy, and growing demand for hard assets have combined to fuel strong capital inflows into precious metals.
When policymakers begin discussing further rate hikes while inflation remains stubbornly elevated, investors often increase exposure to assets that can hedge both inflation risks and policy uncertainty. This dual demand has become the primary driver behind the synchronized rally in gold and silver.
Looking ahead, investors should closely monitor whether rising real interest rates could eventually slow or reverse this momentum.
● Fed Hawkishness Conflicts with Weak Labor Data
Markets are currently facing conflicting signals. On one hand, Fed officials including Cook and Kashkari have openly discussed the possibility of additional rate hikes. On the other, July ADP employment growth fell to its weakest level this year, suggesting the labor market continues to cool.
This divergence underscores the Fed's policy dilemma. Policymakers remain concerned about persistent inflation in the services sector, with the ISM Prices Paid Index climbing to 70.3, reinforcing inflationary pressures. However, a slowing labor market could limit the central bank's room to tighten policy further.
Today's Initial Jobless Claims report, along with speeches from several Federal Reserve officials, will likely serve as key catalysts for refining market expectations regarding the future path of interest rates.
