A 22-year-old Singaporean has admitted to leading an international cryptocurrency theft operation that prosecutors say stole and laundered more than US$245 million, bringing one of the largest crypto theft cases in US history closer to a final reckoning.
Malone Lam, a Singaporean citizen who had been living in Miami, pleaded guilty in a Washington DC federal court to participating in a racketeering conspiracy. The US Department of Justice said Lam was the ringleader of an international cybercrime network that used social engineering, deception and, in some cases, home break ins to obtain information needed to drain victims' cryptocurrency wallets.
The case has attracted particular attention because of the scale of the operation and the extraordinary spending spree that followed. Prosecutors said members of the network used stolen cryptocurrency to finance a lifestyle that included luxury cars, private aircraft, expensive watches, high end clothing, rented mansions and lavish nightclub events.
In one striking example, the group allegedly spent as much as US$500,000 in a single evening at a nightclub. Vehicles purchased or used by members of the network ranged from expensive sports cars to exotic models worth as much as US$3.8 million. The spending helped investigators piece together the trail behind money that the conspirators had attempted to conceal.
The attackers then persuaded victims to provide sensitive information, including passwords, seed phrases and authentication codes. Once those details were obtained, the group could gain control of cryptocurrency wallets and transfer the assets away.
One of the most significant incidents occurred in August 2024, when the group obtained more than 4,100 bitcoin from a Washington DC victim. The cryptocurrency was worth roughly US$230 million at the time, although its value has since moved considerably. The broader conspiracy allegedly generated losses exceeding US$245 million, while other reporting has put the total stolen from multiple victims above US$260 million.
The prosecution also marks a significant development in US efforts to treat large scale cryptocurrency crime as organised financial crime. The Department of Justice described the case as its first bitcoin related prosecution brought under the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act.
Lam was arrested in Miami in September 2025. He is one of 18 defendants charged in the case and the 11th to plead guilty. He faces a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison, while a status hearing has been scheduled for December 8, 2026. Lam and his co conspirators have also been ordered to repay more than US$245 million to victims.
