The European Central Bank is back in focus as fresh inflation data reshape expectations for the regions monetary policy.
Eurozone headline inflation has climbed to 3.3% year over year, with higher energy prices providing much of the upward pressure. However, the underlying picture is more mixed: core inflation eased to 2.4%, supported by softer services-price growth.
The contrasting signals are creating an interesting policy backdrop. While the headline figure could strengthen the case for tighter monetary policy, the moderation in core inflation suggests that underlying price pressures may not be accelerating across the board.
Markets have nevertheless become increasingly confident about the possibility of an ECB rate hike in September, with some analysts describing the move as close to certain.
The currency markets initial reaction has been more cautious. EUR/USD slipped below 1.1600, trading around 1.1575, showing that stronger expectations for ECB tightening have not automatically translated into sustained euro strength.
Meanwhile, economic activity is providing another piece of the puzzle. Eurozone manufacturing PMI remained resilient at 52.7, while Germanys reading reached 54.3, pointing to improving manufacturing momentum in the region.
For traders, several questions are now taking center stage:
📌 Is a September ECB hike already fully reflected in EUR/USD?
📌 Could stronger European economic data provide additional support for the euro?
📌 Will easing core inflation limit expectations for further tightening beyond September?
📌 How will the ECB balance inflation risks against economic growth?
With monetary policy expectations shifting quickly, EUR/USD could remain sensitive to incoming inflation, growth, and ECB communication.
Is the September ECB hike already priced in, or does EUR/USD still have room to move? 👇
